On June 6, 2025, at 00:54 a.m., a leak occurred in the SBM-2 oil transfer pipeline operated by Thai Oil Public Company Limited during the transfer of crude oil from the VLCC vessel MT PHONIX JAMNAGAR. The incident took place offshore, involving a spill of approximately 20 tons of Murban crude oil. The location of the incident is about 13 kilometers from the mainland and 9 kilometers from Ko Si Chang, in waters approximately 30 meters deep.
Ms. Preeyaporn Suwanaged, Director General of the Pollution Control Department (PCD), stated that Dr. Chalermchai Sri-on, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, has ordered the PCD and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources to monitor and assess the environmental impacts and provide technical assistance. The PCD has received reports that the company successfully stopped the oil leak completely. The affected area has been surrounded with containment booms, and Super Dispersant 25 has been applied to break up the oil slick. The company will report the amount of dispersant used to the PCD in due course.
The PCD utilized the OILMAP mathematical modeling system, designed for oil spill response and emergency planning, which showed that the oil slick is expected to move northeast and reach the southern coastline of Ko Si Chang on the western side at approximately 6:00 p.m. on June 6, 2025. The simulation results have been shared with the Marine Department and Thai Oil for preparedness. The PCD will continue to monitor the situation and provide technical support as necessary, Ms. Preeyaporn added.
