Public-private sectors collaborated on a campaign “Car Clinic to Reduce PM2.5” to prevent and reduce particulate matter from cars.

Mr. Athapol Charoenshunsa, Director General of Pollution Control Department (PCD) revealed that Thailand is entering the winter season. It leads to closed weather conditions and inclement meteorological conditions. The air buoyancy ceiling tends to be decreased, causing poor particulate matter dispersion. This affects the accumulation of particulate matter that exceeds the standard level during certain periods. Therefore, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) by PCD together with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and 11 automobile manufacturers including TOYOTA, ISUZU, MITSUBISHI, NISSAN, MAZDA, FORD, BENZ, HONDA, MG, SUZUKI and HINO have implemented the nationwide campaign “Car Clinic to Reduce PM2.5” from 15 October 2021 to 28 February 2022. This year, the state intensifies black smoke detection, “adjust, catch, prohibit, and refrain from entering urban areas”. In 2022, the black smoke emission standard will be more stringent from the original standard (not exceeding 45%); it will be reduced to no more than 30%. Thus, we invite you to check your vehicle before inactivity because it is prohibited.

Mr. Athapol said that the campaign “Car Clinic to Reduce PM2.5” including 11 automobile manufacturers has provided services through the service centers of each brand. The automobile manufacturers have offered free engine checks and discount on lubricants, auto parts and labor rates to attract owners of vehicles that have been used for seven years and above to have their vehicles serviced in order to reduce the impacts of the upcoming air pollution crisis. The discounts have been bigger for older vehicles.
